Day 76: Population distribution/density and Living standards in a changing world

Chapter overview question:  What is the significance of changes in global population for Canada?
(What are political, social, economic changes/effects?)

Canada's population: past and present.  Immigration to Canada.

A review of the demographic transition model and population pyramid
(Quiz Chapter 11 on Friday, Jan 10th)

Figure 11-24.  Population density vs. distribution.
What are various physical/human factors for population density (pg. 382).  Looking at examples in history from SS9 and SS10.  Where did the explorers first settle when they arrived in Canada?  Why?  For example, wanted to be close to water for transportation and irrigation.

Begin Chapter 12: Living standards in a changing world

Measuring development: a look at the United Nations human development report.  This contains the Human Development Index (HDI) which ranks the standard of living in UN member countries.
Based on a) life expectancy, b) literacy rate, c) GDP per capita.  Analyzed Figure 12-1 to see the top and bottom 10 countries.

Video clip: What do you know about the downtown Eastside?  A look at poverty in Vancouver.

Activity: ranking what factors you think are important in raising a developing country's standard of living (education, health, employment, clothing, housing, food)
