How is this a social justice issue?

How would you define communication?  Verbal/non-verbal.  What age group?  Giver/receiver of information.  How to communicate?

Approximately 10% of the population have communication difficulty.
People with speech and language disabilities: autism, cognitive disability, traumatic brain injury, aphasia after a stroke, dementia, or other conditions

Disabilities can affect people in different ways:

  • Speech: unclear or no speech
  • Language: understanding/expression
  • Combination: can also include reading and writing
  • People may also have other physical, sensory, cognitive and other disabilities

What are barriers to communication?
Sometimes people are:  Afraid to talk to us.  Assume we can't hear.  Assume we don't understand.  Think we are drunk.
