Day 77: Living standards and poverty

PARENT HANDOUT:  Please deliver to your parents and have them contact me before January 15th if they do not want you to view Blood Diamond (14A) next week.  We discussed the content of the movie and the connection to our current unit on Human Geography.  This movie is set in 1990s Sierra Leone and is about a quest to recover a rare pink diamond.  This film will provide an insight to issues which may include: poverty, war, corrupt government, illicit money, child labour, slave labour, health care issues, standards of living, population density, migration, and others.

Pages 389 to 393.  Developed vs. Newly Industrialized vs. Developing countries.  Look at Figure 12-2 (and read The Divided Planet) and identify 3 countries that represent each classification.

UN adopted Millennium Developmental Goals (MDGs).  What are these goals and which of these do you think are most important?  Why?  (390)

Video: Mexico City - population pressure.  Looking at issues regarding population and migration, migrant cycle, and urban problems. 

Read pages 392/393.  Answer question #1.

Group projects handed out and topics selected.
Due date for presentations:  Monday, January 20th and Tuesday, January 21st.
