Review topics from yesterday.
2 points that stuck out to you.
1 new fact you learned.
1 point that you are still unsure/confused about the Harvard University transgender swimmer.

Show additional video.
  • -   6 School Trustee nominees in Richmond that voted against the policy (their perspectives/why they voted against it). Are they misinformed? Are they really just against inclusion etc.

  • -  Richmond School District entered into the Pride Parade for the very first time this year (in August). What’s the significance of it? What took so long for them to enter? How will Richmond’s entry help LGBTQ students? Etc.
Why is it important that the LGBTQ community have a pride parade? Some heterosexual people demand that they have a ‘straight parade’, why is this looked down upon?
- You may want to address about Trump’s plan to set gender/sex to only binary and nothing else. A huge uproar is happening because he’s implying that no other gender/sex exists except male/female; men/women. The trans community is deeply hurt by this. Many people, including, celebrities, have lashed out against it. Define/review gender and sex.

"Queer" is a reclaimed word (empowering) for the (L) community.

Student Q's:

  • Are straight people a part of the (L) community?  No
  • Why do you support the (L) community?  What was your motivation or spark that wanted you to support the (L) community?
  • Apart from addressing the issues of (L) how have you supported the community?
  • I believe SOGI is pushing a far left agenda.  Why should students be forced to attend?
    • In SJ we talk about marginalized groups throughout history (women, people of colour, Indigenous, and now gender identity/expression)
  • What do you think about people that believe there is too much focus recently on (L) ideas?
  • How is teaching about SOGI different from teaching religious beliefs or beliefs in general?
  •  What do you think about people that believe there is too much focus on (L) ideas and causes you children to have a negative influence & question their gender?
  • What are the differences between queer, asexual & pansexual?
  • If you like men and women ad you happen to fall in love with a transgender woman, does that make you pansexual?
  • Will identifying as (L) affect future career opportunities?
64% of (L) students report feeling unsafe at school.
Homophobia and transphobia affect all students, whether they identify as (L) or not.  As many heterosexual as (L) students reported harassment against SOGI.

Day 49: Guest speaker

Religion and social justice.  Connections.

Challenge: what can you do to get involved to make a little difference?
It takes some sacrifice.  Make it normal.  Normalize this into your routine.

Examples of connections (positive or negative) between religion and social justice issues throughout history/present day?
What are some ways in which there is some "shade" on the church throughout history?  Ex. views on women.  Views on sexuality.  Religious wars.  Atrocities during war (WWII).  Slavery in colonial America (turned a blind eye).
Martin Luther King = addressed Racial/Gender/Socio-economic issues.

Influence of pop culture....pop culture does not always get it right.  Church has not always got it right.

Where do you go to get your information that is trustworthy/true?  Parents?  Peers?  Media (bias?  is this opinion or fact?).  Religion?  Past experiences.

Fashion cycles.  Used to be 4 cycles, but now there are 52.  Why do we amass so many clothes?  We look at what people have ("needing" the new iPhone).  Consumerism - is this part of the problem?  If you are part of the problem then how do you "self correct?"

What are some problems in the world right now (story about his volunteering time on the island of Lesbos in a refugee camp called Moria.  Volunteer stood guard from 12am-8am outside of a gate where women were sleeping.  43 different men came to the gate that night trying to get in to rape/prostitute women.  All were turned away that night.  The next day volunteers came up with the idea to weld a gate with a lock.  Women on the other side were dancing and celebrating from now feeling safe.

What can you do for one person/one cause?  Helping on a small scale.  Not having to change the world. You are good on your own but better in a group.  Strategically find the one thing that "fires you up" and get involved.  Realistically this will cost you $ and time - will have an emotional connection.

Day 26: Guest speaker: Marketing & Culture

Guest speakers from a local university.

What is marketing?  Meeting the needs & wants of consumers
Process: Marketing mix.  Product.  Price.  Place.  Promotion.

Marketing is responding to wants what we think people need.  Role of psychology in determining what someone wants.
Culture: the sum total of learned beliefs, values, and customs that direct the behaviour of a society's members.  Includes: language, knowledge, laws (ex. difference in guns laws between Canada & USA), religions, food customs (differs in each country), artifacts, music, art, technology, work patterns (# of work days/hours), products.

Marketing influences Culture; Culture informs Marketing.

4P's designed to attract a target market.
Culture is a collection of beliefs, values, attitudes that results in customs, norms, rules.

Opportunity for you to make a difference in marketing.  Doing it well.  Addressing social justice topics along the way, instead of perpetuating stereotypes.
A look at where has marketing gone wrong.

What are traits of culture?

  • Culture has an ingrained influence on our behaviour
  • Culture offers order, direction, and guidance to people
  • Culture is dynamic
  • Culture is learned
  • Culture is SHARED
How is media created and shared: Family, School, Place of Worship, Media.

Under/Over representation problems in media: Gender, ethnicity & race, social class, age, weight, disability.
Look at things with a critical eye: do things need to depicted this way?  Is this hurtful/harmful?  Who benefits?

Under/over representation problems in marketing: advertising, product design, packaging design, commercials, movies & casting of actors, images, spokespeople, sports & team mascots, and more...

Gender in advertising:  How are young boys depicted?  Young girls?  Little boy is dressed scholarly.  Girl is the social butterfly.  How does this impact stereotypical norms?  Create a level playing field down the road?
Ex. Walmart halloween costumes.  Why are skeleton costumes in the boys section?  Why is this a gendered item?  What do you find in the girls section - all princess outfits.

Gender in advertising.  Who is the ad's intended audience?  What is the sub-text of the ad?  How is masculinity defined?

If we are always representing groups of people in certain negative ways then stereotypes will continue.    Ex. one brown corn pop is depicted as the janitor.
Hollywood (gate keepers of culture).  Underrepresentation of people of colour in speaking roles.  Ex. E.T. Mrs. Doubtfire.  JAWS.

Mental health and vulnerable students

Asking some difficult questions:

  • Impact of poverty
  • Myths and held beliefs/Stigma
  • Effects on Children and Families
  • The role of mental illness and trauma
  • How to help
Our beliefs about poverty, homelessness and mental illness create our attitude toward those who struggle with these issues. Society often has an "us and them" approach to social issues....it doesn't affect me, and I'm not like them.  Stigma reinforces attitudes that may prevent change form happening.

What are social determinants of health.  Multiple factors contribute to health and socio economic status (SES).

Activity: stepping into someone else's shoes.  Looking at identity.  What factors contributed to higher health and SES.  CLICK to access the document
Power and privilege.

Who does poverty affect?
Marginalized groups (ex. person with disabilities, single mothers, Aboriginals, etc)
Children living in poverty (usually becomes intergenerational)
15% of people with disabilities live in poverty, 59% of which are women.  People living with disabilities are twice as likely to live below the poverty line.  Homeless individuals likely have a mental disability (estimated 45%).
Indigenous Peoples: In 2014, 64.1% of food bank users were Indigenous Persons.  Aboriginal peoples are over represented amongst the homeless population in virtually all urban centres in Canada.  1 in 2 Status First Nations children lives in poverty.
Minority groups: 1 in 5 minority families live in poverty in Canada as poised to 1 in 20 non-minority families
Elderly: Nearly 15% of elderly single individuals live in poverty

Contributing factors: Cost of living in the Lower mainland.  Mental Health.  Addiction.

  • Is poverty inevitable in society?  If you are born into poverty what needs to happen to break that cycle?
  • What can we do about poverty and homelessness in Richmond?  BC?  Canada?
  • What is the role of advocacy in supporting those who struggle with mental health and poverty issues?
  • How has stigma kept us from working for change?  Think about your attitudes and held beliefs.

This will be a 8-10 minute interview for each student that I will schedule during the final week of exams (Likely during the Block C session).

During this 8-10 minute interview you will be leading the talk, and I will be listening.  I may ask a question to facilitate further discussion but for the most part you will be leading the way.
Your goal is to talk about what you have learn most about this course/found interesting/etc....

You must address the following curriculum organizers:
a) Defining Social Justice
b) Recognizing and Analyizng Social Injustice
c) Moving Toward a Socially Just World

See the following link for a guideline.

There are so many topics and examples that we have covered (and not yet covered).  During your interview, please make sure that you allocate enough time to address each of the curriculum organizers.
You may refer to your notes during the interview, but please do not read directly off your sheet.

Choose the examples that impacted you the most.  Do further research on a topic that interests you.
In no way will you be able to fit EVERYTHING into the 8-10 minute talk.  When taking notes and preparing for this interview, please make sure that you TIME YOURSELF.

Good luck.
